Bearing the name of Jesus carries with it the power of God

The Serendipity of Suffering
Bear His Name – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Acts 3:12-16

Key Verse: 1 Peter 4:16

But it is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name!

When the Apostle Peter wrote of “bearing” the name of Jesus, what was he thinking about? It’s possible that his mind went back to the time he and John were walking into the temple to pray. Before they got inside, they came across a crippled man begging for coins. The beggar asked Peter and John for money, like he had been doing with everyone else. Peter and John looked straight at him and said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” They helped him up and as they did, this man’s feet and ankles became strong. As this man ran into the temple jumping and praising God, the crowd was amazed and Peter realized they were looking at him thinking he had some great power. Peter quickly preached a mini-sermon and pointed them to Jesus. Peter’s exact words were: “By faith in the name of Jesus” (Acts 3:12-16).

Bearing the name of Jesus carries with it the power of God. When we bear the name of Jesus, we will see God move in ways that only He can. Our scripture in 1 Peter 4:16 is painting the picture of what a privilege it is to bear that powerful name. However, that same name of Jesus is rejected by many and, thus, we must be rejected, as well as suffer for that name. We should praise God for the high honor of bearing Jesus’ name, even if it causes us to be rejected.

Father, thank you for Jesus. Thank you for the power of His name. I will bear that name, gladly today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
