Fear of Chaos – Need for Authority
From the Mouth of God
Scripture: Matthew 4:4
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”
Chaos comes when many are speaking, and no one is listening. A teacher who stands before a class of children understands the chaos that can erupt, quickly, if proper authority isn’t given to someone… hopefully the teacher! Every society that has ever existed has dealt with this problem of chaos. Not one society ever decided that chaos was good – no need for authority.
We must, and will, listen to someone – we will demand an authority to calm our chaos and bring order to our lives. Of the many voices, who will you choose to listen to? Who will get your attention? Somebody will get a place of authority in your life – your only choice is who?
Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. Jesus had fasted for forty days, so the devil took his “best shot” at Jesus where he was hurting – hunger. The devil challenged Jesus to turn the stones into bread, which Jesus was very capable of doing. Instead Jesus spoke a truth that dealt with the immediate temptation as well as a principle for our lives. He said: Man must learn to live on “every word that comes from the mouth of God.” If we determine to zero in on God’s Word and keep all other “voices” in the background, our lives will be free of chaos! Jesus came to offer Himself as our guiding light and central authority which will bring order and peace to all who receive Him! Have you made your decision – whose words will you cling to today?
Father, I don’t want to live solely for the ‘bread’ of this world. I will ‘eat’ at your table and listen to every word that proceeds from your mouth. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
