Big Rocks for Strong Christ-Followers
Today’s Big Rock: Doing Everything in Love – Part VI
Scripture Foundation: 1 Corinthians 16:14
And do everything with love.
I opened a “can of worms” at the end of yesterday’s devotion, when I talked about Jesus going up against the existing authorities of His day.
So, if Jesus did that, can’t we do that as well? That has a “yes” and “no” answer to it.
Here is the question: is what we are fighting for a true biblical issue?
In Jesus’s case, He was quoting Isaiah 56:7. Thus, Jesus was fighting a true Biblical issue.
When we are about to take a stand against an authority figure in our society we must look to find out if our issue is truly Biblical.
First question: does the Bible tell me I must respect the existing authorities in the society I live in? Yes, it does:
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. (Romans 13:1-2).
Some people think that if the authorities infringe upon their rights, they can rebel. That would be getting rid of many if not most the laws of our land, they all infringe on people’s rights.
Laws tell me I cannot steal, I cannot drive any speed I desire, and many more laws that I might disagree with.
NO… the only time I can fight authorities is when it is a Biblical issue.
That does not mean I cannot vote against issues or leaders that I disagree with. It does not mean I cannot sign a petition that says I disagree with someone’s decision.
It does mean I cannot just ignore them, disrespect what they say, or rebel against their ruling. According to God’s Word in Romans, that is the same as rebelling against God.
This teaching is very hard for some Christ-followers to accept.
Therefore, Jesus said, “Take up your cross and follow Him” (Matthew 16:24-26). It is not always easy to be obedient!
Father help me to be obedient to you. Amen.
