The Submissive Attitude
For the Lord’s Sake – Part 3
Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 2:13-17
Key Verse: 1 Peter 2:13a
Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men
I hope the Apostle Peter’s words sink deep into your mind and heart: “For the Lord’s sake.” Why do we live the way the Bible tells us to live? For the Lord’s sake. Why do we lay down our rights and become obedient to biblical teaching? For the Lord’s sake! In other words, everything we do that seems so odd to our world, we do because of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
Our scripture is instructing us to submit to every authority instituted by men. For those in Peter’s day it was kings and governors. For us, it means we are to submit to presidents, governors, and local law enforcers. As Christ followers, we respect these offices, even when we disagree with the person holding the office at the time.
In America we are given a way to ask for change—we can vote. Sometimes we get the person we want and voted for—sometimes we don’t. However, no matter what the results, we trust that our God is still in control; no need to riot in the streets! Christ followers voice their opinions through the legal and respectful methods we are given. We are to be submissive to the authorities because the Bible reminds us that God has put them in their positions for His purposes—even if we don’t understand why (Romans 13:1). (Continued)
Father, I will live a submissive lifestyle for your sake! In Jesus’ name, amen.
