Discerning God’s Wisdom
Don’t Harbor – Part 1
Scripture Reading: James 3:13-18
Key Verse: James 3:14
But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.
When ships and boats come in from sailing the oceans, they harbor. In other words, they settle into one spot, close to shore, and stay put. James used this kind of language in verse 14. Along life’s journey, our flesh can start to envy and have selfish ambitions. When we sense these feelings, we have a choice: harbor with them or move on and leave them behind. James tells Christ followers to never harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition.
Envy is an easy feeling to have in this world of wealth and comforts. We have all kinds of methods to see people enjoying the luxuries of their life; on our TVs and in the movie theaters. We have to be very intentional to think through what values are truly important to us followers of Christ. We know that Christ is all-important and wealth can dampen our love for Him. However, the comforts of life that we see others enjoy can look good to us from a fleshly point of view. Envy will grow strong in our lives and if we let it, a bitter envy gets attached to our souls.
When we first catch ourselves feeling envy, we must quickly determine to not harbor these! Move your thoughts to eternal values. (Continued)
Father, remind me how fleeting the wealth and comforts of this world are; help me to love what you love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
