Teach Us to Pray - July 2019

Don’t allow thoughts of doubt to attach themselves to you, for they will erode faith and hope

Five People Who Can’t Pray
Doubting People – Part 2

Scripture Reading: Matthew 9:27-34

Key Verse: Matthew 9:29

Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you”

Jesus stood before two needy men, both were blind! They had been crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” We’re not sure how much time passed before Jesus turned toward them and gave them His attention. When He did face these two persistent souls, Jesus had just one question: “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” When they said “yes,” it was then that Jesus touched their eyes and said, “according to your faith will it be done to you.”

This is a vivid story of what would have happened if these blind men would have been doubting men. The story would have taken a drastic turn, without a miracle provided. Doubting people don’t receive favors from God. It takes belief to be saved from our sins and it takes faith to walk daily with Him. Doubting people look like they are starting the journey with God, but soon prove themselves by dropping out.

I want to clarify one point: God’s people may have temptations to doubt as they do with other issues along the way. God’s people must “take captive” those thoughts of doubt and bring God’s truth to the situation. I like to say it out loud when possible: “Devil, you’re a liar and I choose to trust God.” Those words focus my mind back to where it should always stay: on the words of God.

Don’t allow thoughts of doubt to attach themselves to you, for they will erode faith and hope in your life. What we receive from God is “according to our faith.”

Father, I trust your ability and wisdom in every situation. I may not know your will, but I believe in your strength. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
