How to be Led by God

Let your fears drive you into God’s all-powerful arms

Don’t be Afraid
He Delivers

Scripture: Psalm 34:17-18

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them;
he delivers them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

If God would simply prevent any troubles from coming our way, we would never be afraid! In fact, it wouldn’t be long until we would forget most of the feelings associated with fear. Wouldn’t that be a great perk for us who are part of God’s family?

The first problem with that plan is that the righteous would no longer need to “cry out” to the Lord – as our scripture describes. That doesn’t sound like a bad thing but, it means we wouldn’t “feel” a need for God. The feelings of fear drive us to “cry out.” God’s goal is not to make His children “independent” of Him. He longs for us to grow more and more in our dependence on Him!

The second problem with our plan of complete insulation from all problems is we would never experience the “deliverance” of God for His children. There would be no need. When we go for long periods of time with no experience of God’s loving intervention, we soon lose our interest and appreciation of God altogether. Taking God for granted would be the “norm” for far too many of His children.

This discussion leads us to this conclusion: accept the initial feelings of fear as necessary to our journey with God in this world, but don’t live with these feelings. Immediately insist on your faith taking over. Verbalize the promises of God; believe in the leadership and wisdom of the Holy Spirit! Call to your mind the deliverance promised by our Almighty God. Let your fears drive you into God’s all-powerful arms.

Father, thank you for allowing me to sense my great need of you. Please continue to allow whatever it takes to keep me dependent on your deliverance. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
