Three Stumbling Blocks

When we sin in a sexual area, we dishonor God and His presence in us

Sin Against Ourselves

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:13-20

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 6:18

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.

According to the apostle Paul, sexual sin is the only sin that we sin against ourselves. All other sins are committed outside our body. Sexual sin involves our body and, thus, is a sin against ourselves. As Christ followers, we are a temple of the Holy Spirit. In other words, God’s Spirit lives in us, resides in our body. When we sin in a sexual area, we dishonor God and His presence in us. That is a serious sin!

Our Key Verse warns us clearly: flee from sexual immorality! That one phrase has much truth packed into it. To flee indicates urgency. We must not see this as “take your time!” When we don’t deal with sexual temptations in an urgent way, we usually fail!

Secondly, the word flee suggests to us to run, don’t walk! This can mean to literally run; get out of the place that is causing temptation. It often can refer to more than literal running, but mentally running. This would mean to flee from the thoughts that are flooding your mind. It could mean flee from the emotions that are flowing in your heart! No matter whether it’s literal, mental or emotional, move quickly to safer ground; run to God’s grace!

Finally, Paul tells us, in 1 Corinthians 6:20, to “honor God with our body.” Most Christ followers honor God with their time, energy, and even money. God wants us to present our bodies to Him as well! God paid a heavy price for our lives. Don’t give yourself away to cheaper things.

Father, you deserve all of me: body, soul and spirit. Thank you for sending your son to die for me. I receive your gift. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
