Most people want to know: “What must I do to have eternal life?”

What Must I Do?
This is His command – Part 1

Scripture Reading: 1 John 3:21-24

Key Verse: 1 John 3:23

And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.

Any serious-minded person, at some point in their life, wonders about life after this present life. Some come to the conclusion that there is no life after this one. However, most people, according to surveys, indeed believe there is something beyond this present world. It is this group that comes to the logical question, “What must I do to have eternal life?” This is the question we’ve been studying this week.

Today, the Apostle John describes the answer in plain terms: “And this is His command: to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as He commanded us” (1 John 3:23). As we have been realizing this week, “believing” is actually hard work. Salvation by believing means that a person sees and understands how wrong they have been. When we realize we are doing life wrong, a sane person comes to the realization that things must change in their life. No one says, “I’m doing life wrong” and then continues to do life wrong. That is insanity. We must struggle to change, but some people try to change once they truly accept the fact that they are wrong! We ask the question, “What must I do?” once we’ve determined to change. (Continued)

Father, your Word convicts and convinces me that I did life wrong. I am willing to change directions and follow you! In Jesus’ name, amen.
