When we believe in Jesus, we receive the Holy Spirit of God

Power to Change
God’s Holy Spirit – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Acts 1:6-11

Key Verse: Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Our scripture for today clearly describes how we will receive power for our walk with God.  Jesus was promising His followers that we would not be left without God’s strength working in us.  When we believe in Jesus, we receive the Holy Spirit of God.  It is that moment that we have access to the power of Heaven for our daily lives.

If this is still true for us today, why does it seem that so many believers lack personal power?  I believe there are at least two major reasons.  First, I think we misunderstand the meaning of God’s power in us.  We think God’s power would be demonstrated with constant miraculous events.  It has always been the temptation of man to demand God’s power our way!  When Jesus was being tempted in the desert, the devil tried to get Jesus to jump off the pinnacle of the temple!  In other words, show your power.  Jesus understood the difference in God’s true power and man’s understanding.  God’s power is not for self aggrandizement.  God’s power is not for selfish gain.  The Apostle James wrote: “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives that you may spend what you get on your pleasures” (James 4:3).

God’s power is for God’s glory, not ours.  God’s power is reserved for the good of kingdom purposes, not selfish purposes.  We must keep straight the proper understanding of God’s power in us.  (Continued)

Father, I have all I need in you.  You provide the power of Heaven to operate in me.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
