In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands. Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. They will be won over by observing your pure and reverent lives.

For the modern reader, we have come to the most controversial concept in the New Testament: the authority of the man in their homes. As most theologians believe, this is certainly, in large part, a cultural concept. What I mean by that is it was how their world operated at the time; women were not equal in their society. In their world, women often were not given educational opportunities; their world had very different views and roles for men and women.

How should we, then, read and apply this scripture to our lives? We must put Peter’s words in the context of His entire letter. Chapter two describes the importance of Christ followers being submissive to governmental authority. We studied that concept and understood the need to show respect to those in authority—not necessarily agreement to their every decision.

In our homes, we must show respect to one another—even when we don’t agree. Peter is speaking to Christ followers, challenging them to live in their homes the way Christ would want them to. Living as Christ is a powerful influence. Living as Christ will bring peace and wisdom to daily life. Our disagreements need not get ugly, because we treat each other with respect even in those tough moments! (Continued)
