We can have a hope that becomes an anchor for the soul, firm and secure

Hitting the Mark
Suffering for the Gospel – Part 5

Scripture Reading: Romans 5:1-5

Key Verse: Romans 5:3

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.

The writer of the book of Hebrews was clear: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever…” (Hebrews 6:19-20).

What is your anchor in life? In other words, when you hurt, who or what do you immediately turn to? Some use alcohol, others turn to some drug. Some turn to family or friends, some turn to improper relationships. What is your “go to” when you are suffering? Everyone has something that brings some comfort to them, even if it isn’t good for them in the long run. These verses from the book of Hebrews are telling us that Jesus has paid the ultimate price to be our “go to” person. If we will turn to Him, He will be our comfort and our hope!

The Jewish temple in the Old Testament times had an inner room where the Ark of the Covenant was kept. It was there that the presence of God dwelt for them. There was a heavy curtain between the presence of God and the people. Only the High Priest could enter this inner room and plead for God to forgive the people of their sins. When Jesus died on the cross, the Bible tells us that the curtain, in the temple of Jerusalem, was literally torn in two from top to bottom and the room was open for all to see inside (Matthew 27:51). By this God gave the visual to the Jewish worshipers that Jesus had paid the price for all to have a relationship with God. All could come and be forgiven of their sins and have the hope of eternal life. Is Jesus your anchor during the storms of life? Turn to Him!

Father, I will trust you for my help. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
