Keys to Listening
Scripture Reading: John 10:25-27
Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
This month we are going to explore the scriptures that teach us how to hear from God. It is my prayer that by the end of the month, all of us will be well equipped to hear God speaking to us. Today, I want to point to some of the benefits of hearing from God. It is my opinion that not enough Christians truly seek to hear His voice in their life. Could it be we are afraid we won’t get the answers we want? Look at some of the wonderful benefits of listening for God to speak.
First, it proves that God knows and cares deeply about us personally. Our scripture for today explains that we are known by God. John 10:27 is clear: “I know them,” Jesus declares, as He refers to His sheep that listen to Him. If I said that the President of the United States is a friend of mine, you might be impressed. But if you found out that we had never spoken to each other, you would never believe we were friends. When we hear from God, it proves our relationship.
The second benefit of hearing from God is to be able to follow His life-giving principles. In our scripture for today, Jesus said: “My sheep listen to my voice…they follow me” (John 10:27). All God’s wisdom is wasted on me if I don’t hear, listen and follow Him. As you face today’s work, isn’t it good to know that the wisdom of our all-knowing God is available to you?
Let me give you good news in this very first devotional of November, God is still speaking, and His people can still hear Him if they choose!
Father, I am anxious to learn how to hear you more and more. Please teach me…I am listening! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
