Are you ready to pledge allegiance to loving God with all your heart, soul, and strength?

Modeling God’s Way – Part 4

Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Key Verses: Deuteronomy 6:5-6

And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.

Continuing from yesterday’s devotional we see that commitment is key in this idea of good modeling. I used the illustration of how Olympians will often do things that they really don’t want to do, but they do it because of their commitment to the goal of winning the Gold. In my opinion, this illustrates what we must do to truly be good models to our children and all others around us, do things that, at the moment we may not want to do, but do it because we made a commitment to all that Jesus’ commanded.

Of course, the next question anyone who is serious about being a good model will ask: What are these commands? Jesus said that if we love Him, we will keep His commands (John 14:15). Even though the Scripture reading for today is from the Old Testament, we know that Jesus fulfilled these commands spoken about in Deuteronomy 6:5-6. So, we who live under the New Testament, see the commands as all that Jesus taught and modeled. This may seem like a huge challenge, trying to remember all that Jesus taught, but the good news is that God sent the Holy Spirit to live in us and to remind us of these commands. Also, Jesus said that loving God and loving people around us sums up all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22:34-40). In other words, if we seek to love God and people, the rest will fall into place.

Are you ready to pledge allegiance to loving God with all your heart, soul, and strength, and love the people around you? This is the commitment that leads to modeling that impacts your kids and everyone else in your life!

Father, with your help, I will love you and all the people that are around me today! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
