Direct Your Money – Part 1

Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 6:10-19

Key Verse: 1 Timothy 6:18

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.

The Apostle Paul is mentoring the young pastor Timothy in our reading today. The subject Paul wants to help Timothy with is money and how to direct it. The apostle understood that pastors must speak to their people about money if they are good shepherds of God’s flock. Money, in its many forms over the ages, is one of the greatest battles that mankind deals with. Money has the power to direct our very lives if we let it. God’s people are to direct their money and not allow it to direct them. By God’s Spirit within us, we can be victors in this battle.

Somewhere along the way I heard a good illustration of this concept of directing our money. If we were going to have a plumber put plumbing in our new home, we would not want to come to the house and find a large pipe in the side of our house. We did not want to simply flood our new home. We expected the plumber to direct the water; some to the bathrooms and some to the kitchen. When we get our paychecks, some people treat them like this pipe in the side of the house; they don’t direct their money.
