Diseased Fruit Trees
Dealing with Disease – Part 1
Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:27-30
Key Verse: Matthew 5:29
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
When fruit farmers find a diseased tree, they must act quickly and decisively. They know that the disease will not only wreck the fruit of that tree but will spread to other trees as well. So it is when we discover that we have sin (disease) in our lives, Jesus taught His followers to act quickly and decisively.
Our scripture passage for today is very hard on dealing with the disease of sin: “If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out,” and “if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off.” Was Jesus being serious? Is this a literal command? I believe Jesus was being very serious and possibly literal in some situations. In most situations, these statements should translate: Do whatever it takes to stop yourself from allowing sin to take up residence in your life. Jesus is trying to convince us that sin will ruin this life and our eternity. Don’t mess around with sin!
The Bible admits that sin is tempting because it is pleasurable for a time. The Bible refers to the “fleeting pleasures of sin” (Hebrews 11:25). Yes, sin looks good to our flesh. Sin makes promises of long term pleasure; promises that are never kept. If something is sinful, you can mark it down that a destructive aspect will be heading your way. There is no such thing as a truly good sin. The good we first see in sins is an illusion, a lie of the devil! We must deal with all sin quickly and decisively! (Continued)
Father, grant me wisdom to quickly spot the destructive nature of the sins that seem to be so pleasurable. In Jesus’ name, amen.
