Joy to the World

Walking in the Spirit is an unfolding revelation of what God is asking us to add or subtract from our lives

The Evidence of God’s Spirit
Walking in the Spirit – Part I

Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:16-26

Key Verse: Galatians 5:22
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: … joy…

It will not surprise you that to maintain the joy of the Lord in your life you must be living each day in obedience to the Spirit’s voice. The Apostle Paul describes this lifestyle in Galatians 5:16:

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

The big question for today is: are you walking in obedience?

Some people see obedience as a static thing where you get a set of rules to obey and then you work hard to comply to those rules. That is not a biblical view of obedience… not even close!

The Apostle Paul made clear that all things might be permissible but not all things are beneficial (see 1 Corinthians 6 as well as 1 Corinthians 10).

Walking in the Spirit is a growing and unfolding revelation from God.

In other words, I am doing things now with no thought that I am doing anything wrong. However, in the future, the Spirit might nudge me to stop doing those things. It’s at that point that I am responsible to obey that nudge and stop doing those things that I once did without thought; this is called “spiritual growth”!

Notice the last phrase of Galatians 5:16:

… you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

This tells you the goal that God’s Spirit in you wants to achieve. Not that all desires of the flesh are wrong, but only those desires that tempt us to sin.

There are three terrible things that result when we follow the sinful desires of our flesh. First, the Bible says that sinning brings death to our spiritual lives. Second, following our sinful desires of the flesh wrecks our witness to the world.

I want to deal with the third thing that results from following the desires of our sinful flesh in tomorrow’s devotional.

But for today, know that God wants you to enjoy the abundant life and joy that Jesus provides from His death on the cross.

God wants us to shine bright, so others might come to Him for their salvation. Let’s focus on walking in the Spirit!

Father, grant me the wisdom and strength to walk in complete obedience to You. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
