Is Money Bugging You?
Treasures on Earth – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:19-21
Key Verse: Matthew 6:19
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
As we continue the discussion of keeping God’s kingdom values higher than earthly treasures, we need to ask the question: Why wouldn’t a Christ follower want to build treasures in heaven more than treasures on earth?
The obvious answer to that question is, worry over our survival here on earth. Too often we are not as generous in our giving because we worry about how we are going to handle our needs. Jesus knew this would be the case so He completed this teaching on money in verse twenty-five: “…do not worry about your life.” Jesus goes on to remind Christ followers that our Father in heaven will take care of us—no need for worry. In fact, Jesus reminds us how useless worry is—it can’t fix anything nor add one day to our lives. Modern medicine will tell us that worry actually shortens our life!
I don’t believe Jesus would tell us to throw caution to the wind and give everything we make away. No, Jesus would examine our hearts, wanting us to love Him more than our money. It’s a heart issue, not a bank account issue. Don’t allow earthly treasurers to capture your heart. Jesus wants to be the only one we cherish. (Continued)
Father, show me a need that you want me to give to and I will obey. In Jesus’ name, amen.
