Three Stumbling Blocks

The Bible says: “Life does not consist in the abundance of… possession;” do you believe that and live that way?

What Life is About

Scripture Reading: Luke 12:13-21

Key Verse: Luke 12:15

Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

For the next ten days we will be seeking to understand God’s opinion on money. Questions like: How much is enough? Can I ask God for more? What is “rich” in God’s economy? These, and more, should concern sincere Christ followers. Jesus does want to help us with answers. Someone suggested that 15% of Jesus’ teaching was dedicated to money. If so, we ought to be able to get a good feel of what God expects of us when it comes to money.

The first statement about money that I want to look at is in our Key Verse for “Life does not consist in the abundance of… possessions.” Do we truly believe that statement? American Christ followers probably struggle to incorporate that truth into their thinking. We are so surrounded with the values of materialism that it is difficult not to buy into it.

Is it possible to truly develop a lifestyle that doesn’t center itself around material possessions? What would that lifestyle look like? I believe it is possible so let’s identify its visible characteristics. Out of the additional reading section, we see, first, a man who had been blessed with plenty for his own needs. I believe God chooses that for His children. Second, God gives excess to us so we can share it with those less fortunate. God wants to be generous with us and He wants us to be generous with others. Finally, Jesus’ parable points to the day we die. God wants us to prepare for that moment; living like we believe it’s coming!

Father, I give you permission to remind me often to live in a way that prepares me for my passing from this world to your world. I’ll be listening. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
