Fearless

To be absent from this present body is to be present with the Lord

Fear of the Final
The Eternal Body – Part 2

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:1-10

Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 5:1 NLT

For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.

Some propose that when we die our “soul sleeps” in some unconscious state until Jesus comes back for us.  However, the Apostle Paul makes it clear that this is not what happens.  Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he makes it clear that to be absent from this present body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8).

Jesus told a parable in Luke 16 that confirms that our souls don’t sleep, but rather go immediately into the presence of the Lord.  Jesus said that when this poor beggar died, he was carried by angels into Abraham’s arms.  (To a Jewish audience, this was symbolic of heaven.)  Though this story is probably a simple parable, we know Jesus wouldn’t tell a story that would lead us to believe something that wasn’t true!

We really have no reason to fear our passing from this earth.  As Christ followers, we have a great inheritance waiting for us.  When we close our eyes for the last time on this earth, we will open them in the presence of Jesus, our Lord and Savior!  As the hymn describes: What a day, glorious day that will be!

The evil one will try his best to whisper doubt about your destiny.  Resist him and trust in the everlasting love of your Father in heaven.

Father, I will trust you and rest in the work Jesus did to secure my eternity in heaven.  In Jesus’s name, amen.
