The Silent Waiting Period

Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop.

Our Scripture for today talks about sowing seeds, something that most of us have done very little of. However, we can understand the lessons that the Apostle Paul is teaching us. The farmer can plant seeds in two different ways, sparingly or generously. The question is why would he plant seeds sparingly? The farmer would know that his harvest is going to be small by planting so few seeds! Farming is a scary business, there are so many elements that a farmer cannot control. The weather, for example, can help their crops grow or can destroy their crops. After planting the seeds, basically the farmer is out of control from that point forward. If the farmer is fearful, he may not want to put so much money into the purchase of seeds for fear of losing his investment. After the seeds have been planted, the only thing to do is wait. It can be a very scary period of time of the farmer.

The point for us is this: We must live with scary silent periods of time; these times of waiting for God to answer a prayer or to move a huge obstacle in our life. We all have experienced these silent periods, when it seems that God has disappeared. The Bible reminds us that these waiting periods are not abnormal in the life of one who follows God. The Bible tells believers, over and over, to “wait on the Lord.” Google the phrase “wait on the Lord” and you’ll see how many places in the Bible that we are told to practice waiting. Our faith is stretched while we wait on God.

Father, I will wait on you in faith, knowing that you will never fail me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
