God highly esteems the humble and contrite in spirit. (Isaiah 66:2)

When We Are Contrite
To Be Esteemed

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 66:12-14

Key Verse: Isaiah 66:2

Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?” declares the Lord. “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.

Take a moment and meditate on what Isaiah 66:2 is telling you. Think about the word esteem: to think highly of; consider; favorable opinion, regard, respect. Think with me about the fact that the God of all creation has these feelings of esteem. Let the words sink into your mind; God esteems you! God thinks highly of you, favors you, regards you and respects you! The prophet Isaiah was inspired by God to write these words, thus they are facts!

God highly esteems the humble and contrite in spirit. I believe that means you! If you are taking time to quiet yourself before God, if you are reading this devotional, you are saying, “I need God.” It’s the prideful and unrepentant that would never take time out of their valuable day to get before God. The proud don’t think in this way. They feel adequate for the tasks of the day; they don’t need help! How sad to realize that they also are not “esteemed” by God.

I must admit, it is hard for me to be mindful of how much God values me. I tend to feel totally unworthy to be His child. To trust these words—that God regards me and respects me—that takes faith on my part! Yet I know God’s Word is true and I must form all my opinions based on the truths of the Bible. I must base my opinion of myself on these same truths! I come before God humbly, remorseful that I do not have more to offer. Because of this attitude, God highly esteems me as His cherished child. Blessed be the name of the Lord!

Father, I receive your favor by faith in your Word! Thank you for receiving me; thank you for valuing me; thanks for your respect for me! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
