The Writings of John, the Elder

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God (1 John 5:1)

Learning to Love God

Today’s Scripture: 1 John 5:1-11

Key Verse: 1 John 5:3

Loving God means keeping His commandments and His commandments are not burdensome.

How does anyone know, for sure that they are a child of God? The first verse of the fifth chapter of John answers that question: “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God”.

The title “Christ” in this verse also means “the Messiah”. For hundreds of years, the Jewish nation believed that the Messiah would come from God to save them. Jesus came into the picture and claimed to be the Messiah but most of the Jewish people rejected Him.

The Jewish people envisioned a warrior that would show up and deliver them from the Roman rule that they were under at that time. They simply could not believe that their Messiah was this person Jesus, born in Bethlehem and a humble friend of sinners.

Even to this day, most Jews are still looking for the Messiah to come. They describe Jesus as simply a good teacher.

How do we know if we love God the way we should? Our Key Verse answers this question: it is those people who keep God’s commandments.

I believe that John is thinking of the teachings of Jesus that fulfilled rather than the Ten Commandments.

God writes His commandments on believer’s hearts, according to the prophet Jeremiah: “’But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day,’ says the LORD. ‘I will put My instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people.’” (Jeremiah 31:33).

Notice the phrase “deep within them”. This phrase refers to and describes the work of the Holy Spirit in all believers. This work of the Spirit guides us into all truth. This in turn fulfills the commandments of God. Therefore, the Apostle Paul emphasized the importance of staying in step with the Spirit.

We cannot love God unless we are following what the Spirit is telling us to do. We believers may wonder at times whether we are hearing the Spirit of God the way we should. We must rest in the fact that God knows how to get through to us because He has a message for us!

Father, I believe that Jesus is the Messiah that saves us from our sins. With your help, I will obey the teachings of Jesus in my daily life. Grant me insight as I read my Bible. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
