“Don’t cause the Holy Spirit sorrow by the way you live” (Ephesians 4:30 TLB)

The Submissive Attitude
For the Lord’s Sake – Part 6

Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 2:13-17

Key Verse: 1 Peter 2:13a

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men

Immediately following the Apostle Paul’s warning to not use unwholesome (bad) language, he tells us why we should work hard at it: “Don’t cause the Holy Spirit sorrow by the way you live” (Ephesians 4:30 TLB). Some translations say it this way: “Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit.” In other words, we are to be very careful in the way we talk and the way we behave because, as believers, we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Since God lives in us, we must never cause Him sorrow by the way we talk or act.

We are in the middle of a heated battle for who will be our next president. It’s easy to allow our flesh to rule over our spirit, and start carelessly slamming the person we don’t want as our next president. Christ follower, please follow Christ’s example in speech and behavior. Unbelievers are taking note of not only what you say, but how you say it. Your kids may be taking note of how you are acting. And, one thing you can count on, God is taking note of how you are talking and acting. Don’t grieve the heart of God.

Let’s remind ourselves of Jesus’ words during this election season: “…love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you” (Luke 6:27-28). The Apostle Paul reinforced this as well: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21, emphasis mine.)

Father, help me to guard my mouth so that I will never grieve your heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
