God Uses People to Care for People
God’s Rich Variety – Part VIII

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

Key Verses: 1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT and 1 Corinthians 12:11 NLT
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. … It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

These last seven devotionals are about the spiritual gifts that God gives to His children. God gives these gifts to every believer so that they can have a part in building God’s Kingdom. As each believer discovers and uses their gifts, the church becomes a force in our world.

As I have mentioned before, one of the worst trends in American churches is the heavy reliance on paid staff to carry out the affairs of the church. The only way any church can truly be the force that God intends is for every believer to see themselves as “ministers”, and engage with the church using the gifts God has given them.

In earlier devotionals, we have looked at how to discover the gift that God has given but here is one more idea on that subject.

Any believer that is not sure what their spiritual gift is can look at their church as a “smorgasbord” of opportunities. Most churches have a variety of areas that need volunteers. A believer can discover what ministry matches their gifts by volunteering in one or more areas and see which one works best and feels right.

I hope your pastor or church leaders support this idea of “trying out” a ministry to see if it fits. The worst that could happen is a believer feels pressure to continue volunteering in an area that does not match their giftedness.

Sometimes leaders in our churches are so desperate for help that they do not consider whether their volunteers are comfortable with what they are doing. I suggest that a believer that decides to try out several ministries first let the church leaders know.

A new couple walked into my church several years ago that were leaving a church they had attended for many years. At one point I asked them why they left and their answer gave me a warning I never forgot. They told me that they could not get out of the “jobs” their previous church had given them and the only way they could get out was to leave the church.

From that point forward, I made it clear to all new volunteers that our church encouraged people to try different ministries until they find the one that fits them the best. We also let it be known that it was okay to take a break when needed.

Discover your spiritual gift and where to use it and find fulfillment in your service to God’s Kingdom.

Father, help me to find where You want me to service and grant me the strength and wisdom to serve You well. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
