The main job of the Spirit in us is to guide us into all truth (John 16:13)

Live in the Spirit – Part 4

Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:16-26

Key Verse: Galatians 5:16

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

In order to truly follow the Jesus lifestyle model, we must learn to discern the Spirit’s voice within us. Jesus promised that when He went back to heaven, He would send the Spirit to live in us. The main job of the Spirit in us is to guide us into all truth (John 16:13).

How do we develop an ear to hear the Spirit of God in us? First, we must understand that it takes time and practice. For example, I learned to play the piano, a little, by ear. (For non-musical people, that means playing a song without notes.) Though I didn’t stay at it long enough to get good at it, I was getting better with practice. So it is as a believer, we keep practicing in the art of hearing God’s voice. We examine the thoughts that come to our minds to see if they fit the scriptural picture of Jesus. If a thought seems opposite of what we read in the Bible about Jesus, we know that thought is not from God’s Spirit.

First John 4:1 reminds us not to “believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” As we listen to advisors, teachers or preachers, we must once again examine what they are saying, comparing the message of the Bible to what they are saying. Even our own spirit can sometimes sense a false message that is coming to our minds. (Continued)

Father, help me today to test the voices that fill my mind, seeking your voice only. In Jesus’ name, amen.
