Key Verse: Luke 12:20

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

Yesterday’s devotional reminded us to be intentional in directing our money to the areas we say are important. We want to avoid mindless spending on things that have no eternal value. We mentioned that the Bible points to the family—that we must take care of it first. Secondly, the Bible talks about the Family of God; our church family. If you have time to read 2 Corinthians 8:1-4, you will see how God’s people saw giving to the “saints” as a privilege. They were speaking about helping those who had been redeemed by believing in Jesus. The New Testament called all the redeemed “saints,” not because everyone was perfect but because they understood what Jesus accomplished in them. If you are a believer, the early church would call you a saint. The early church believed in taking care of the needs of the church.

Traditionally, the church has taken care of the needs of God’s family through the giving of the tithe. Tithe does not represent equal giving but equal sacrifice; it’s percentage giving. If every believer would give 10% of their income to the church they worship in, there would never be a need that couldn’t be cared for. Worldwide, it is estimated that only 7.4% of professed churchgoers are tithing 10 % of their income. Out of the whole population of the United States, it ends up that barely 3% of us tithe 10% to our churches.

Does God bless a person who decides to tithe to their church? We will look at the challenge that God makes to His people on this issue tomorrow. (Continued)

Father, I will support my church family. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
