Friendship that goes to the level of “best friend” will be tested

Friend Relationship
A Covenant of Friendship – Part 1

Scripture Reading:  1 Samuel 20:35-42

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 18:3

And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.

Jonathan and David made a covenant of friendship.  No one knows exactly what that looked like, but we do know it would be put to the test in future days.  Jonathan’s father was king of Israel.  When King Saul saw how David was so successful at everything he did, Saul became extremely jealous.  This jealousy got so bad that Saul was determined to kill David.  King Saul even tried to kill Jonathan, his own son, for being such a faithful friend to David.

Any friendship that goes to the level of “best friend” will be tested along the way.  We are all human and life circumstances will create times when it would be easy to destroy a long term friendship.  Your best friend will frustrate you at times, and vise versa!  These times of strain in relationships are normal, but also critical moments.  If we allow our flesh to rule, we will destroy one relationship after another.

Best friends stay best friends by working at the relationship during the rough moments!  It probably will take some serious conversations to communicate hurt feelings.  Most of us tend to avoid these tougher conversations, but we must face the fact that problems in relationships don’t normally simply go away on their own!  (Continued)

Father, I want to enjoy long term friendships.  Grant me your patience and steadfast love during times when relationships aren’t easy.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
