Things Gone Wrong Can Be Life
Wasting Away
Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:13-18
Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 4:16
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
The title for today’s devotional is not a pleasant one to think about: “Wasting Away.” The Apostle Paul uses the phrase to describe what happens to our bodies as we grow older each year.
God did not make our earthly bodies to last for eternity. One might say that in comparison to eternity, our temporal bodies are “throwaways” or “disposable”.
All this being true, how should you think when things go wrong with your body?
Sometimes people make a comparison to the bodies of other people. When they think in these terms, it can cause jealousy or discouragement. It can seem unfair for someone else’s body to be enjoying more health than our own. Comparison thinking can cause pride when our body looks better or is healthier than another’s. Either way, comparison thinking is not godly thinking.
The Bible prepares us for a life that is not good to our bodies. Our bodies are going to waste away. It is not because we have sinned or because we have been righteous. It is just life.
God may decide to heal a hurt along the way, but in the end, these bodies are returning to dust. Jesus healed a multitude of people during His ministry on earth, but every single person He healed eventually died.
Do not blame God for your aches and pains. Praise Him for your future body that lasts forever.
Father, what a great and glorious day it will be when I trade this mortal body for the immortal one You have promised! In Jesus’s Name, I pray, Amen.”
