The Cross is an Obstacle

Discipline truly leads us to a life that really is free

An Obstacle to Indulgence
Discipline Yourself – Part 2

Scripture Reading:  1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 9:27 NLT

I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

As you have gotten deeper into this year, have you given up on some of those New Year resolutions?  I’m sure you feel bad about those; maybe even a little shame.  However, were any of those resolutions about your journey with God?  Have you stopped a routine of prayer, Bible study, or being faithful to the church services?  If so, it undoubtedly was because of this battle we all face with flesh.  It is hard to keep doing the right things; it seems so much easier to just cave in to the path of least resistance.

When I was a young kid in a Sunday school class, the teacher posted a quote from an unknown author (at least I don’t remember the author) that said: “The yoke of a free man is discipline.”  I’m not sure why that stuck in my mind, but I’m so glad it did.  I have discovered the truth in that saying.  I have counseled many people over the years that allowed their indulgences to rule their life.  Believe me when I say, they were not experiencing a freedom in life; they were in bondage.  Discipline is a “yoke” and feels oppressive many times.  However, discipline truly leads us to a life that really is free.  Maybe you need to get back to beating your body down; making discipline a priority of your daily life.  If you are not intentional about this, you’ll default into the bondage of your cravings!

Father, I nail my sinful nature to the cross and declare you to be Lord over my life—in every area.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
