The Making of a Disciple
The Traits of a Disciple – Part II

Scripture Reading: 1 John 2:1-6

Key Verse: 1 John 2:6 NLT
Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

The second trait of a disciple of Christ is that they are in control of their emotions.

This does not mean that suddenly, they are perfectly calm in all situations. It means that they are aware of their emotional weaknesses and continually work on controlling their weaknesses.

The most common emotional weakness is anger, but it is not the only one Christ-followers must control. Feeling discouraged or depressed is another emotional weakness that many fight against.

A recent study suggested that there are at least twenty-seven distinct emotions (verywellmind.com).

The good news is that God wants to help us control any emotion that damages our life in Christ. Through His divine touch, God can bring total healing to our emotional lives.

However, there are times when God leads us to use medical help. The old saying, “God helps those who help themselves,” can be true in some cases.

Some Christians feel that going to a doctor or counselor or using medicine is a sign of doubt in God. However, God gives wisdom to some people so they can help other people. Thus, He may lead us to a wise doctor or counselor to heal damaged emotions.

Let’s look at anger, the most common emotion people must control. Here are two Bible verses that speak directly to the emotion of anger:

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. (Ephesians 4:31)

And:

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. (James 1:19-20)

The biggest hurdle in controlling our anger is realizing we can control it.

Too many people with angry outbursts say, “I just can’t help it; it’s just who I am.” However, people who make this claim can control their anger with someone they feel they need in their life, such as their boss at work.

A person who feels they cannot control their anger may need outside help, like a counselor. When we really want something, we normally can find a way to have it.

God wants His children to control all their emotions so Christ can control them.

Father, help me control my weak emotions. I want You to be the Lord of my life, not my emotions. I pray this in Jesus’s Name, amen.
