Victory Over Strongholds

Human effort will fail when fighting a stronghold in your life

Victory Over Strongholds
What Is a Stronghold – Part II

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 10:1-5

Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 10:4
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

One of the most important things about strongholds is that they are extremely difficult for us to break with our power. Increasing our determination is not sufficient. We need the power of God.

As our Key Verse reminds us, a believer must not fight with the weapons of this world. Your human effort to break a stronghold will fail because it is a spiritual battle.

Human effort can be very important when dealing with normal daily challenges and temptations of life. However, when strongholds are in place, self-will is not enough to destroy them. This is why the Apostle Paul reminds us that it is useless to fight with the weapons of this world.

How does a person know that they are dealing with a stronghold? One can know it has become a stronghold when efforts to defeat it fail over and over. When a sincere Christ-follower has battled long and hard with a stronghold and is still failing miserably, it is undoubtedly a stronghold.

There is only one way to deal with a true stronghold and that is total surrender to God. This means that you become convinced that you do not have what it takes for victory. This is when you fall on your knees before God and admit your total helplessness to win over a stronghold.

This is the place we get to when we finally realize that we are helpless and hopeless with our efforts without God. We let go of our pride and humbly fall before God in desperation for His divine power to help us. We come to the end of our rope!

Once we get to this place, God steps in and provides for us what only He can provide:

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)

Notice the words “through and through”. God sanctifies us in every corner of our lives, and no stronghold can stand against this work of God. “Sanctify” means to separate us from all that is unholy and set us apart for God’s use. Trust this promise: “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it”.

We cannot do it, but God can. And He will break all strongholds in our lives! The only question left is: Have you come to the end of your self-confidence?

Father, I believe in You and Your power to set me free from my strongholds. I surrender myself to You and trust Your power to work in me. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
