Victory Over Strongholds

God’s divine power can destroy the strongholds in your life

Victory Over Strongholds
What Is a Stronghold – Part I

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 10:1-5

Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 10:4
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

People have different personalities, tendencies, and patterns “installed” in them by nature (genetics) or by outside forces (such as parental upbringing, teachers, or cultural socialization).

We develop our strengths and weaknesses as we grow into adults. Once we believe in and ask Jesus Christ to come into our lives, God makes us spiritually new; the Bible describes this as being “born again” (John 3:3).

However, because of our backgrounds, there can be some stubborn negative patterns or attitudes in our lives; we can call these patterns “strongholds”.

A definition of the word “stronghold” is a “place that has been fortified” (Oxford Languages Dictionary).

Everyone has weaknesses, but some people must battle weaknesses that are “fortified” in their lives. Something has driven a particular weakness deep into their being and their lives, deeper than some might think normal. The devil is aware of these strongholds and uses them against us.

One of my pastorates was outside a large city where many of my parishioners drove to work each day. Some of these commuters experienced racial troubles and had a prejudice that became a stronghold in their lives.

One of the men I knew grew up in that city. He told me of a time when his dad had to sleep with a shotgun on the couch to protect their family. One night his dad shot a man dead that was breaking into their home. This experience “fortified” a prejudice in his mind.

This man loved Jesus but needed to grow in faith and learn to fight his negative patterns with, as our Key Verse says, “weapons not of the world”.

This month’s devotional is about strongholds that can hold a person prisoner in their minds and hearts. Strongholds can rob a person of the inner peace that Jesus died to give us and keep a believer from becoming a vibrant witness for Christ.

The devil loves to use strongholds to make lies about Jesus convincing and about the power He has that can deliver us from all sin. Many times, Christ-followers give up and settle for less than what God wants for them. They can even convince themselves that their stronghold is normal and something they must live with as a believer. The devil knows that God makes His power available to believers but does his best to obscure it. Jesus exposed what Satan has come to do:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” (John 10:10a)

God’s divine power can destroy any strongholds in your life!

Father, I praise You for redeeming my life. I claim Your power to destroy all strongholds that exist in my life. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
