Run from Lust – Part I

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Corinthians 6:15-20

Key Verses: 2 Timothy 2:22-24 NLT
Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.

Notice in today’s Scripture Reading and Key Verses the words “Run from” in the New Living Translation. The NIV translation uses the words “Flee from”.

The message is the same in both cases. Both passages tell us to flee from lust. The common definition of the word “lust” is a deep craving for sexual desires. The biblical definition includes the notion to fulfill those desires if given the chance.

In other words, God’s Word tells us to run from anything that causes us to cross this line of immorality. I like the way our Key Verses start: Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts…”. No matter how old a person is, “youthful lusts” can still be a temptation.

When can a person expect to be free of lust? The answer is never in this life. We can so discipline our lives that the intensity of this lustful temptation diminishes, but the devil always stands ready to entice us with youthful lust.

I remember a Nazarene General Superintendent who was speaking to a large crowd of pastors and told a story of him taking a walk with an 80-year-old man of God. To the superintendent’s surprise, this saint testified that he still had to fight the temptations of lust. The superintendent thought to himself, “You have got to be kidding, even when I’m 80 I’ll still have to fight lust!”. The story got a big laugh, but we all knew it was true… the devil never gives up on luring us away from God’s standard of purity.

The key to success is not to beat oneself up hundreds of times and promise God that we will not allow ourselves to feel lustful again. If that is all we do, then that repentance does little good in keeping us from sinning again.

Look at our Key Verses again for the answer to our lust problems. These verses give us the key to success:

“…pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts”.

Pursue right living by getting involved with the fellowship of believers. Be an active participant in the church family and develop friendships with fellow Christ-followers. Make your closest friends those who also call on the Lord with pure hearts!

Father, grant me wisdom and strength to pursue purity. In Jesus’s Name, amen.
