Neglected Biblical Truths
Every Idle Word – Part I
Scripture Reading: Matthew 12:33-37
Key Verse: Matthew 12:36 NLT
“And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.”
Today’s Key Verse may not be as neglected as some of the others, but too many take this verse too lightly.
The Key Verse references “judgment day” and that should get our attention. Remember that:
…it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27 KJV)
One of the things that is going to happen on judgment day is that God will judge every idle word we speak.
The English Standard Version (ESV) of today’s Key Verse uses the word “careless” instead of “idle”:
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak. (Matthew 12:36 ESV)
The word “careless” helps us to understand what God is judging better than “idle”. The Oxford Languages Dictionary defines the word “careless” as “not giving sufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or errors”.
There is no doubt that we all say careless words, at times. That being so, this Key Verse should make all of us stop and ask the Holy Spirit to help us avoid careless words.
I like to can distinguish between “careless” words and “thoughtless” words.
Careless words harm other people.
Thoughtless words have no intentional harm. Thoughtless words could harm, in some situations, but there is no intention for harm when being said.
When we get into conversations with people and someone comes up that is not present, it is easy to gossip – to say something that makes people in the conversation feel good or bad about the person talked about. If we are going to take our Key Verse for today seriously, then we must ask the Holy Spirit to help us not to speak careless words about people.
I have had the Holy Spirit check me and remind me during a conversation to not say the words that came to my mind. The Holy Spirit has reminded me when words would harm the reputation of another person.
The key to all this is staying in step with the Holy Spirit that speaks to us as we go about our day (Galatians 5:16-26). Only God knows if we obey when we hear the Spirit caution us about the words we speak.
Father, help me to honor Uou with every word I speak. Help me to never say careless words. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
