We Have Spiritual Muscles – Part V

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:6-21

Key Verses: Hebrews 13:20-21
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Our focus for this first week of devotionals is the spiritual muscles that all Christ-followers have. God Himself gives spiritual muscles to us believers.

Like our physical muscles, we can develop and use our spiritual muscles for everything God wants to accomplish in and through us.

I hope it is obvious that non-believers cannot accomplish what we believers can because God has not given non-believers spiritual muscles. People without Christ in them can accomplish worldly fame and fortune, which people sometimes confuse with God’s blessings.

But for things that truly matter, in the light of our eternity, we can only do with spiritual muscles. The Key Verses for this first week of devotionals confirm this truth. It is the God of peace, through the work of Christ Jesus, who equips us with everything good for doing His will.

Take note of this phrase in the Key Verses: God works in us what is pleasing to Him. Our spiritual muscles are God Himself living in us through our faith in Jesus Christ.

One of the first things that God wants to do in our lives with His spiritual muscles is to make us a holy people. The Apostle Paul describes this best in his letter to the Thessalonians:

Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NLT)

Think about this verse. God wants to make you holy in every way. That may seem impossible as we consider our many weaknesses. But remember the last phrase of this verse: “God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.”

We cannot but He can! God can give us holy intentions so that we always intend to please Him, even when our human weaknesses cause unintentional failures.

Father, I trust Your power to make me what You want me to be! I give You permission to do Your divine work in my life and make me a holy vessel for You. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
