Our Spiritual Muscles
We Have Spiritual Muscles – Part IV
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:6-21
Key Verses: Hebrews 13:20-21
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Most of us take for granted our physical muscles until injury or surgery changes our complacency.
Can you think of a time when you had to focus on your muscles, doing some intentional work to get them back to properly functioning?
I recently had knee surgery and have had to work daily to get that knee and the surrounding muscles working as they should.
When God puts His Spirit in us, our spiritual muscles are part of that divine gift. We can take these muscles for granted until we experience a spiritual failure. It is usually at a weak point in our spiritual lives that we start to understand our part in making these spiritual muscles strong again.
Upcoming devotionals give a lot of attention to the importance and the “how to’s” of making our spiritual muscles strong. In this first week, I want to paint a picture of God’s part in our spiritual muscles.
Let me remind you of a couple of scriptures that we have studied previously. The Apostle Paul instructed the Ephesian Christ-followers that God gave them incredible muscles for their battles in this life:
I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 1:19-20 NLT)
In our physical life, the more we build our muscles the more physical power we have. The same is true in our spiritual life. God has given us His incredible power for us who believe. This power that He has given us is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead… that is incredible power!
I cannot over-emphasize the importance of every believer realizing that they have this spiritual power available to them. The last thing that the devil wants is for God’s people to realize they have all the muscle they need to have complete victory over anything the devil throws at us.
Take a moment and give God thanksgiving and praise for His gift of power in you!
Father, I thank and praise You for giving me the spiritual muscles for victory over the evil one. Please remind me of this power when I am being tempted. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
