Our character is transformed when we surrender to the Lordship of Jesus!

The Manger
Character Change – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:1-2 & Romans 12:9-18

Key Verse: Romans 12:2

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

The third word used in the definition of the word transformation is “character.” When a person is transformed by the work of Jesus, their character is changed. In other words, the traits that form the inner person, such as honesty and moral purity, are taken to new levels. The conscience that was undeveloped is reactivated by the Holy Spirit.

Our key verse for today speaks of being transformed so that we no longer conform to the pattern of this world. What are the patterns of this world? The American dream is all about me—the self-focus in order to gain money and fame. Our national politicians are not trusted because of well-known patterns of deceit and cover ups. Our TV shows and movies are filled with sexual immorality that is continually more explicit.

What a crude and rude way to welcome the Son of God into the world—born in a manger. Yet Jesus transformed that manger and He is still transforming crude and rude people into people after God’s own heart. Jesus’ model and His teaching transformed His followers from selfish cowards to courageous co-workers for God’s kingdom. The woman at the well was transformed from one who couldn’t keep a husband to a devoted wife with Jesus at the center of her mind and heart. Our character is transformed when we surrender to the Lordship of Jesus! (Continued)

Father, I want You to be my Lord as well as my Savior. I will follow Your teachings as I walk through my day. In Jesus’s name, amen.
