So God is at work, first in our desires, then in our will-power!

God is Working – Part 3

Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:12-18

Key Verse: Philippians 2:13

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

In our study of Philippians 2:13 we have realized that God is working. The Bible lets us know that God never slumbers or sleeps (Psalm 121:4). God is at work in our lives. As we saw in yesterday’s devotional, He works on our desires, helping us want what He wants. Our greatest battles are truly in this area of desires. Our flesh seldom wants what God knows is best for us. If we follow the desires and cravings of our flesh, we will certainly destroy the wonderful life God wants for us. Since God has this deep and eternal love for us, He helps us fight our fleshly wants by giving us desire for more eternal values.

The next phrase of verse 13 makes all this possible: “…and the power to do what pleases Him” (Philippians 2:13b). So God is at work, first in our desires, then in our will-power! God not only guides us to the better life in Jesus, He empowers us to live it out every day. What a great promise, God’s power as well as His wisdom.

As we consider the landscape of Christmas and the star that hangs over the nativity scenes, we can know God is still helping all of us find Jesus. Even after we find Jesus, God continues to lead us and empower us to walk with Jesus. Without Jesus, we are left with our own selfish cravings to guide us! (Continued)

Father, I can’t imagine what my life would be like without You. Thank You for saving me from myself. In Jesus’s name, amen.
