Thanksgiving for the Kingdom of God
Signs of God’s Kingdom Coming – Part II
Scripture Reading: Matthew 24 3-14
Key Verse: Matthew 24:3
Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives. His disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will signal your return and the end of the world?”
Let’s look at some of the signs of Jesus’s return that He gave as an answer to the disciple’s question.
In Matthew 24:4-5, Jesus warns His followers not to be deceived when they hear people claim to be the Messiah. Jesus said that many would declare this. We must be careful not to let these claims deceive us.
When we think about a false messiah, do we think of some eccentric person on the street corner yelling that He is the Messiah? Those claiming to be the Messiah will not be that obvious. But they will be convincing, and that is why Jesus gave the disciples this warning!
For us who know Jesus as our Savior and read the Bible, we will be able to discern the truth when this deception comes.
In Matthew 24:6, Jesus said that there would be “wars and rumors of wars”. However, Jesus quickly adds that we should not panic because the end will not come immediately when we see and hear of these things.
There are thirty-two ongoing conflicts in the world right now. These range from drug wars, terrorist insurgencies, ethnic conflicts, and civil wars (source: https://wisevoter.com/). Many of these conflicts have been going on for many years. This is only one sign that tell us the beginning of the end.
Jesus tells the disciples that a third sign of His coming is famines and earthquakes all around the world.
According to the World Food Program (https://www.wfpusa.org/), as many as 828 million people go to bed hungry each night and this food crisis continues to worsen.
According to Statista (https://www.statista.com/), there have been over 1500 earthquakes on average per year over the last few years.
So, what do these statistics mean? How soon is the end of the world?
Jesus answers that question:
“But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.” (Matthew 24:8)
In pregnancy, the first pains that a woman feels does not mean that they are going to have their baby right away, but they know that it is coming soon. Though they use the word “soon”, they do not know exactly how long it will be.
The signs that Jesus describes should help us to live in anticipation, stay alert to our spiritual condition, and make sure we are staying close to our Lord.
Father, I know that You will be sending Jesus back to earth to gather us who believe. Please help me to be faithful in my walk with You. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
