Thanksgiving for the Kingdom of God

Jesus’s teachings balance the reward and the cost of being part of His Kingdom

Thanksgiving for the Kingdom of God
The Value of the Kingdom – Part III

Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:44-52

Key Verse: Matthew 13:44
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.”

When Jesus told these parables, He showed the value of God’s Kingdom. These parables help people understand why they should seek God and His Kingdom above all other things.

A question that a person might ask when considering the life change that Jesus calls for is: “Why should I sacrifice so much to be in this Kingdom that Jesus describes?”.

Jesus never tried to hide the cost of being in God’s Kingdom. Jesus gave up His life to create this new covenant and Kingdom, so it is not strange for us to pay a price to be a part of it.

The dilemma we find, as we consider the cost, is the strong emphasis in the New Testament on the “gift of God”. Here are the Apostle Paul’s words to the Ephesian church:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

These verses leave no doubt about how we enter God’s Kingdom. God saves us simply by our faith; it has nothing to do with how good we are (our good deeds or works).

But how does this idea of a “gift” fit into what Jesus said:

“And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” (Luke 14:27-28)

These two verses remind us that once we are in God’s Kingdom, there is still a cost. We should examine these costs. We need to follow Jesus and obey all His teachings; this does have a cost, a sacrifice on our part.

Jesus’s teachings balance the reward and the cost of being part of His Kingdom. Once we see the value of the Kingdom, we can see it is worth the cost!

Father, I praise You for providing a path to eternal life in Heaven. Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God and I trust You for my salvation. In Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
