Thanksgiving for the Kingdom of God
The Value of the Kingdom – Part I
Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:44-52
Key Verse: Matthew 13:44
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.”
In the next seven devotionals we look at how the scriptures describe the value of the Kingdom of God.
Today’s Scripture Reading consists of the parables that Jesus used to describe how valuable the Kingdom of God is. Jesus wanted His followers to know that the Kingdom of God is worth any sacrifice to be a part of it.
Today’s Key Verse references one of the parables that Jesus used to make clear the high value of God’s Kingdom. Jesus said that a man discovered a treasure hidden in a field. This man hid the treasure again in the same field and then went quickly to buy it. The man was willing to sell everything he owned to get enough money to buy that field. In this man’s eyes, the treasure was worth everything he had to have it.
Is it possible that most people in the church these days have lost sight of the value of being part of the Kingdom of God? One thing is for sure: there are a lot of people attending church regularly that have not given God their all.
One of the clearest messages of the New Testament is that Jesus would never cheapen the Kingdom of God just to build the number of people who follow Him. Many of Jesus’s followers left Him because they felt His teachings were too hard:
At this point many of His disciples turned away and deserted Him. (John 6:66 NLT)
Jesus never begged people to follow Him, nor did He change His message to get people to stay with Him.
The Kingdom of God is so valuable that no matter how hard it is to understand some aspects of the Bible, we must never give up trying to grow our knowledge of God and His Kingdom. It is worth all of our efforts to claim God’s Kingdom as our own. Its value is tremendous in this life and priceless in the next life. As Jesus reminded His followers:
“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Mark 8:36)
Father, forgive me for taking for granted Your gift of eternal life. Help me to always value Your Kingdom more than anything else in this life. In Jesus’s Name, amen.
