Habits of Highly Effective Christ-Followers
Keep the Saw Sharp – Part IV

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:17-32 NLT

Key Verses: Ephesians 4:21-23 NLT
Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from Him throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.

When it comes to “sharpening the saw” in our spiritual life with God, a great passage of Scripture to read and study is 2 Peter 1:3-8:

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Incorporating this passage into your life makes you a highly effective Christ-follower. Let me highlight the main truths.

First, God’s divine power gives us everything we need for a godly life. There is no need to worry about being too weak to live the life that God calls us to; where God guides, He also provides.

Second, becoming a highly effective Christ-follower takes effort on our part, and our effort cannot be halfhearted. The Apostle Peter wrote that believers must make “every effort” to grow into an effective disciple of Jesus.

Third, the basic faith that we had when we accepted Jesus as our Savior is a faith that needs to grow. To grow, we need to add to our faith serially:

  • “goodness” (moral excellence),
  • “knowledge” (knowledge of God),
  • “self-control” (God’s power in us enables us to rule over our fleshly cravings),
  • “perseverance” (patient endurance and strength as we wait on the Lord’s help with our troubles),
  • “godliness” (imitating God in our lifestyles),
  • “mutual affection” (for our Christian brothers and sisters), and
  • “love” (for everyone outside the Family of God).

The Apostle Paul put it this way:

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children. (Ephesians 5:1 NLT)

Here is why we want to make every effort to add these virtues to our faith:

For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter1:8

Let me turn this verse around, making it into a positive statement: If you do have these qualities in increasing measure, they make you a highly effective Christ-follower.

May God help us all to put forth every effort to add to our faith!

Father, remind me and grant me Your strength to become a highly effective follower of Jesus. I ask this in Jesus’s name, amen.
