Habits of Highly Effective Christ-Followers
Put First Things First – Part VII

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”

These last six devotionals have been about putting first things first in our lives. Yesterday we looked at the things to get rid of in our lives to make room for the things that honor God; I referred to these as the “don’t do“ scriptures.

Today I want to look at the “do” scriptures that honor God. There are many more that the New Testament includes, but here are some of the most common:

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. (Ephesians 4:2)

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (Ephesians 4:32)

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8)

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. (Colossians 3:12-14)

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. (Colossians 4:2)

Live wisely among those who are not believers and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone. (Colossians 4:5-6)

These “do” scriptures (along with others) can be overwhelming unless we understand that we have the rest of our lives to learn and practice.

Join me in making God’s Kingdom’s values first in your life. Print and post the “do” scriptures in a place where you see them, so they remind you. Making these scriptures a habit go a long way in making you a highly effective Christ-follower.

Whatever you do to make it a habit, keep Jesus Christ and His teachings first in your life and God promises to give you everything you need in this life and the next. Make room in your life for Him.

Father, I want the “do” scriptures to be a reality in my life. Give me the wisdom and strength to put these first every day. I pray this in Jesus’s name, amen.
