God vs. Money – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:22-30

Key Verse: Matthew 6:24

“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”

Jesus is giving us several truths in this short verse about money.  The first truth is an underlying fact that few consider: Everyone has a “master.”  Jesus said it this way: “No one can serve two masters.”  All of us will serve something or someone.  We may not see it that way, but by our choices, we reveal our master—the one thing that captures our hearts!

The very word “master” here is the Greek word, “kurios,” the same word that is translated “Lord” in other places in the New Testament.  The Bible tells us that Jesus came to be Lord of our lives, not simply Savior.  The Bible is also very clear: God is a jealous God; He will not allow other rivals. Jesus is really confirming what we read through the scriptures; we must choose God over all else.

This scripture in Matthew is reminding us that our choice between God and money is all about our passions, not our material possessions.  People with lots of money can, in their hearts, love money more than anything else.  Our Father in heaven knows what gets our attention and energy in this life.  Where is your focus?  What has captured your heart?  (Continued)

Father, I want to want you above all else—help me!  In Jesus’s name, amen.
