Put On… – Part VII
Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:8-17
Key Verse: Romans 13:14
Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
Today’s Key Verse has another instruction about the phrase we have been looking at: “put on”. Some versions, such as the NIV, do not use the “put on” phrase but gives the same idea with the phrase “clothe yourself”.
If we have asked Jesus to forgive our sins and to come into our lives, we always have Him in us. However, the problem is that sometimes Jesus does not shine through us in our words or behavior. That is why the Bible instructs God’s people to “clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh”.
When we give in to the desires of our flesh, we do not show Jesus to those around us. We have not lost Jesus from our lives, but those around us cannot see Him reflected by our lives. And the one thing that our world needs is to see that Jesus lives within people and makes them new creatures.
I am sure you have the desire for Jesus to shine brightly in your life. If you do not, I question whether you have an authentic relationship with Him. Do not forget the promise in Philippians 2:13:
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.
God gives us the desire for Jesus to shine brightly in our lives to help others find Him. Having this desire means that we must clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ. What does it mean to clothe ourselves with Jesus?
It means that every day we decide to talk like and act like Jesus Christ. It is an obvious truth, but I want to say it anyway: we need to read the New Testament to know how to act like Jesus.
We need to know how Jesus reacted to sinners and saints alike. We need to know how Jesus responded to people who were attacking Him and slandering Him. We need to know how Jesus viewed money and the love of money.
The only way to get serious about clothing yourself with Jesus is to know what Jesus taught and how He acted while on earth.
As we start this new year, are you willing to commit with me to know Jesus better than ever before? And to remember that the main goal of each day is to sound and look like Jesus in all our interactions with family, friends, and co-workers?
We will not do it perfectly, but we can get better each year that our Lord gives us!
Father, I do commit myself to clothe myself with Jesus each day of this year. When I fail, please remind me to re-commit and keep going. In Jesus’s Name, amen.
