Big Rocks for Strong Christ-followers

Big Rocks for Strong Christ-Followers
Today’s Big Rock: Doing Everything in Love – Part IV

Scripture Foundation: 1 Corinthians 16:14

And do everything with love.

We ended yesterday’s devotion with the words of the Prophet Jeremiah that God would someday put His “law in their minds and write it in their hearts”:

“I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:33).

God fulfilled that prophecy through Jesus, when He gained victory over death and the grave and when He went back to Heaven.

Jesus promised His followers that His Spirit would live in them. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command:

“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 1:4-5)

If you continue to read the book of Acts, you can see that God fills all believers in Jesus with His Spirit. In fact, the Apostle Paul made it clear that no true Christ-follower misses out on God’s Spirit living in them:

…And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. (Romans 8:9).

I realize, after 45 years of pastoring, that most Christ-followers feel inadequate in knowing how to please God in their lives. However, I love the assurance the Bible gives us that God will do what He said He would do, by putting His law in our hearts and minds:

“for God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him”. (Philippians 2:13).

If you are doing all you know to do to stay close to God, praying daily and reading your Bible regularly, then you can trust that it is God who puts desires in you to do what He wants you to do. And, just as important, He will give you the power to do it. Isn’t that the best news ever?

This brings us back to the title of the last few devotions: “Doing Everything in Love”. God is at work in us all, slowly but surely growing us into people that are known for our love. Jesus is fulfilling the Law of God in every true believer!

Father, today I will rest in the truth that I will want what you want and have the power to do it. In Jesus’s name, amen.
