The Writings of John, the Elder

Christ-followers can do less fretting if they do more trusting in the powerful Spirit that lives in them

Our Victory is Won – Part II

Today’s Scripture: 1 John 4:1-6

Key Verse: 1 John 4:4

But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

Yesterday we studied that true Christ-followers have already won the victory over those that want to deceive us. Today, we study why we can rest in this truth.

But first, I want to remind you that it is possible to know a truth and yet be miserable in our walk with God.

In other words, many Christ-followers spend their days stressed out and full of anxiety over their circumstances, even though they have heard the message that God works out all our circumstances for our good!

How sad this must make our Father in Heaven. God makes many promises to His children, yet these promises do not bring peace to them because they do not embrace them. So, before we talk about one more promise, will you challenge yourself to receive it (as well as all of God’s promises) and enjoy His peace?

Here is the reason we know we have already won the victory over false teachings: “the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.” (1 John 4:4).

Let that truth sink into our souls!

God gives all His children the Spirit of Jesus and that Spirit is stronger than the spirit of the world. I wish this meant that true Christ-followers would always follow God’s Spirit in them, but that is not automatic. Therefore, the Apostle Paul challenges us to daily commit to following the nudges of God’s Spirit in us. Take a moment to read Galatians 5:16-26.

Do not miss this great news. You have a powerful force living in you if you have asked Jesus to forgive your sins and to live in your life. This powerful Spirit in you can protect you from poor choices and keep you discerning truth, even when there is so much false information coming at us every day.

However, we must stay alert to this powerful Spirit and be determined to follow any nudges that He gives us.

We need a daily routine of reading the Bible and praying to keep us listening to God’s Spirit.

Another safeguard God has given us is the weekly assembly of believers for mutual encouragement and teaching. The Bible warns us to not neglect this assembly (Hebrews 10:25).

If we are faithful to God in these areas, we can rest assured that God will be faithful to give us His wisdom and protection!

Join me in doing less fretting and more trusting in the powerful Spirit that lives in us. May God grant us His peace in this troubled world, so that those around us want what we have in Jesus.

Father, help me to trust in your Spirit within me. Remind me to be a living witness to the peace you give your children. In Jesus’s Name I pray, amen.
