Lessons from Luke

God knows that His love working through the lives of His people is the “miracle” that our world needs to see!

Moved by Compassion – Part I

Key Verse: Luke 7:13

When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion…

Our Key Verse for today reminds us of the heart of Jesus!

As he walked along with large crowds following him, He saw a woman who was broken hearted. Think about the setting. Jesus had obtained fame at this point, and everyone wanted to get his attention.

If we think of modern-day politicians in that same situation, most of us would agree they wouldn’t take time and care for one person, when they had hundreds of others following them.

But Jesus could see this woman’s heart and her situation. And He instantly knew that she was a widow and that it was her only son who had died. Jesus took the time to walk over to her, told her not to cry and then walked over to the coffin raising the boy back to life!

The scripture then goes on to tell us something that we can learn about miracles: God does them to help people who believe in Him and trust Him. We also learn from this story that God was putting Jesus in position to become even more well known in their world.

When we ask Jesus into our lives, He not only redeems us but puts His love and compassion in us. It is with His love working through us into other people’s situation that Jesus becomes “well known” to our world today.

This miracle that we are reading in today’s scripture is a dramatic way to show Jesus’s compassion. But if all His followers would show the world the love that Jesus has put in our hearts, our world would be changed in ways that would benefit more than one broken hearted woman.

If you are like me, you probably think “if Jesus would just do more miracles today, more people would believe”. God knows that His love working through the lives of His people is the miracle that our world needs to see!

When we look at our surroundings, and what the little good that we might do, it doesn’t seem as dramatic and powerful as raising a person from the dead. However, God sees the bigger picture and He knows what can happen when all his people, around the world, each do their part in loving people with His kind of love.

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, His answer should confirm God’s opinion of what can change the world. Matthew 22:37 says, “Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important, Love your neighbor as yourself’”.

Look carefully at Jesus’s answer, it sounds like he gave the greatest commandment, and then added the second greatest, but He didn’t. He told the man that two commandments come in at a tie in importance. Jesus said the “second is equally important”. In other words, it is just as important for us to love the people around us as it is to love God. His answer reminds us of how much God loves the whole world, and that it is not His will that anyone be lost. (John 3:16 and 2 Peter 3:9)

God’s love for your family members, co-workers, and neighbors is so great that He is trying to tell you that if you love Him, you must love them!

Let’s ask God to help us to see the people we encounter today with His love and compassion. Sometimes people far from God can disgusts us with their sinful words and ways. May God help us to show them loving kindness despite our feelings. It is that kind of love that will change our world!

Father, please give me a heart of compassion and mercy towards the people around me. I asked this in Jesus’s Name, amen.
