Prayer Establishes Our Rapture to God

Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.

Every time we include the words (or at least the concept of) “may your kingdom come” in our prayers, we should be reminded that we are “aliens and strangers in the world.” Our goal is to not get comfortable living in this world; we are to long for the comforts of the next world!

What would “aliens or strangers” look like in our world? Some Christians seem to think we should dress in ways that are years behind in fashion; for them, that is spirituality. Should we be odd looking, identifiable by simply looking at our clothing? It is true that our dress can be immodest and unbecoming of a true Christ follower, but, other than that extreme thought, I don’t think our outward physical appearance is what the New Testament writers had in mind.

Our values should be the first indication that we are “aliens and strangers” to this world. It’s mostly after people get to know us that we will seem odd to them, because of our values. These principles that we hold dear will stand out in a society that preaches just the opposite. Things like honesty, integrity in business deals, kindness, pro-life issues, and marriage purity are just a few values that seem odd to this world’s value system.

Our attitudes should also look odd to those in darkness. Forgiveness, love, trust and faith all are part of our Christ-like attitude. Exhibiting this attitude in the face of their counterparts will make us aliens and strangers in this world.

Father, your kingdom is coming! I pray for help and courage to daily live your values. I’m glad this world is not my home. I’m just passing through. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
